The veil was never meant for a single world.

It hung in soft, luminous folds from Virelia’s head, its gossamer threads spun from the pale fringes of the mushroom that bloomed only where the veil between worlds thinned. Each strand shimmered faintly, catching echoes of places that did not quite exist here. She adjusted it with quiet precision, ensuring it fell just so across her face and shoulders. Not for beauty, but for balance. A crooked veil could lead to a crooked crossing.

Around her, the grove had been prepared with reverence rather than decoration. Rings of bioluminescent caps formed a quiet altar, their glow pulsing in time with something distant. The Kiamara moved between them, placing small offerings. Droplets of dew gathered before dawn. Fragments of shed chitin.

Behind Virelia, someone waited.

He stood at the edge of the ring, hesitant to step closer. Grief clung to him in a way that even the glowing caps beneath his feet could not soften. His lover had been taken by the rift weeks ago. Not dead. Not gone. Just… elsewhere. Slipped between the seams of the world like a misplaced thread.

Most would have told him to let go. Virelia did not. She moved through the circle she had prepared, checking each placement with the practiced care of someone who had done this many times before. The veil shifted, responding not to wind but to something deeper. An unseen current tugging at its edges. Good. That meant the threshold was close.

Some Kiamara designed unions for others, weaving garments and ceremonies to bind hearts across species and stars. But this… this was older than love, older than tradition. This was a reunion. A reckoning.

Virelia, she was a walker. A keeper of thresholds, a quiet guide between what was and what could be. But more than that, she was a matchmaker in the oldest sense of the word. Not one who arranged meetings, but one who refused to let bonds unravel simply because the gods disagreed.

“Stay within the ring,” she told him gently, her voice soft but certain. “No matter what you see. No matter if she calls from beyond it.”

Her guest swallowed, nodding. The mushrooms pulsed brighter.

Virelia placed the final offering at the center — a small token he had given her, something that still carried the warmth of the one he sought. Love, she had learned, was the strongest tether. Stronger than fear. Stronger than the rift itself.

The veil stirred. Not from wind, but from recognition.

“Your bride is not lost,” the Kiamara murmured, lowering her head as the delicate threads slipped forward, obscuring her sight. “Only misplaced.”

For a moment, she smiled, soft and knowing.

“I will find her.”

The glow deepened, stretching into something vast and endless. The grove dissolved at its edges, reality thinning into strands that mirrored the lace upon her veil. With a steady breath, she stepped forward, letting the fabric guide her path as it had so many times before.

Behind her, the grieving lover waited. Ahead of her, somewhere beyond the veil, was a reunion waiting to be woven back together.
